Fabric Requirement for Pants — Quick Reference
Pants fabric requirement depends on three things: the style (slim, regular, flared), your waist and hip size, and the width of the fabric roll. The charts below cover all common combinations used in Indian tailoring.
Values are in metres and follow the buy what you need principle — rounded up to the nearest 0.25 m to account for minor variations in cutting.
Pants Fabric Chart — 44" Wide Fabric
44" is the most common fabric width sold in India for suiting, gabardine, cotton drill and linen trousers.
| Style | S (Waist ≤30") | M (Waist 32–34") | L (Waist 36–38") | XL (Waist 40"+) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slim / Formal Fit | 1.25 m | 1.25 m | 1.50 m | 1.50 m |

| Pleated (Formal) | 1.50 m | 1.50 m | 1.75 m | 2.00 m |
Values are for standard inseam (about 28–30"). Add 0.25 m for extra-long legs (inseam 32"+).
Pants Fabric Chart — 36" Wide Fabric
36" fabric is narrower, so you need more length. Common for traditional cotton and some suiting materials.

| Slim / Formal Fit | 1.50 m | 1.75 m |
| Regular Fit | 1.75 m | 2.00 m |

| Pleated (Formal) | 2.00 m | 2.25 m |
Pants Fabric Chart — 54" Wide Fabric
Wide 54" fabric is often used for premium wool, suiting blends and palazzo-style trousers.

Factors That Affect Pants Fabric Requirement
Leg Style
Flared and wide-leg pants need significantly more fabric at the hem than slim or tapered styles. The difference can be 0.25–0.50 m per pair.
Inseam Length
Standard inseam is 28–30 inches. If your leg measurement (inseam) is above 32 inches, ask your tailor to add 0.25 m to the fabric quantity.
Pattern Matching
Checked, striped or printed fabrics require extra length so patterns can be matched at seams. Add at least 0.25–0.50 m for any repeat pattern.
Pleats & Lining
Double-pleated formal trousers use slightly more fabric. Adding a full lining to formal pants needs an equal amount of lining fabric.

How many metres of fabric do I need for pants?
For regular-fit pants on 44" wide fabric, you need 1.25–1.50 m for S/M waist and 1.50–1.75 m for L/XL waist. Flared or wide-leg trousers need an extra 0.25–0.50 m.
How much fabric is needed for slim fit pants?
Slim fit pants require about 1.25 m on 44" fabric for smaller waist sizes and 1.50 m for larger sizes. Because the legs are narrow, you save a little fabric compared to regular fit.
Does fabric width affect trouser fabric requirement?
Yes. Narrower 36" fabric requires about 25–30% more length. Wider 54" fabric lets you cut with 15–20% less length compared to 44". Always confirm the width of your fabric roll before buying.
How much extra fabric for patterned or checked pants?
For checked or striped fabric with a repeat, add at least 0.25–0.50 m extra so the tailor can align the pattern at the seams. Larger checks may need 0.50 m extra or more.
