Key factors

What Changes the Fabric Needed for a Shirt

Sleeve type and length

Full-sleeve shirts use 0.40–0.50 m more fabric than half-sleeve of the same size. Very long shirt lengths (above 32") need an additional 0.25 m.

  • Half sleeve: saves ~0.50 m vs full sleeve
  • Long shirt (32"+): add 0.25 m
  • Measure sleeve length with arm bent at 90°

Chest size

Fabric requirement scales with chest size. The difference between size S and XL is 0.75 m on 44" fabric — a significant amount that's often underestimated.

  • S to M: add 0.25 m
  • M to L: add 0.25 m
  • L to XL: add 0.25 m
  • Very large (50"+): add 0.50 m over XL

Pattern and fabric type

Patterned fabrics need extra for matching the design across the back panel, yoke, and sleeves.

  • Plain fabric: no extra needed
  • Striped: add 0.15–0.25 m for pattern alignment
  • Checks: add 0.20–0.30 m
  • Large print repeats: add 0.25–0.50 m

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many metres of fabric for a men's shirt?

On 44" wide fabric: half-sleeve shirt needs 1.75–2.50 m; full-sleeve shirt needs 2.25–3.00 m, depending on chest size (S to XL). Always buy 10% extra as a cutting buffer.

How much fabric for a full sleeve shirt in L size?

A full-sleeve shirt in size L (chest 42–46") needs 2.75 m on 44" wide fabric. Buy 3.00–3.25 m to have comfortable buffer for the collar, cuffs, and any cutting errors.

Can I stitch two shirts from the same piece of fabric?

Yes. Two half-sleeve shirts in size M need 4.00 m on 44" fabric. Two full-sleeve shirts in size M need 5.00 m. Buying a longer piece is often more efficient than buying two separate pieces.

Why does fabric width affect how many metres I need for a shirt?

Shirt pattern pieces — front panel, back panel, sleeves — are laid along the fabric length. Narrower fabric (36") can only fit one panel at a time, requiring more running length. On 44" fabric, both front and back panels fit side by side, saving fabric.
