What affects fabric needed

Factors That Change How Much Fabric You Need

Sleeve style

The single biggest factor. A full-sleeve blouse needs almost twice as much fabric as a sleeveless one. Always confirm the sleeve style before buying.

  • Sleeveless: minimum fabric, lowest cost
  • Short/cap: add ~0.15 m over sleeveless
  • Three-quarter: add ~0.35 m over sleeveless
  • Full sleeve: add ~0.50 m over sleeveless

Fabric width

The width of the fabric roll determines how many body panels fit across in one cut. Wider fabric means you need fewer metres of length.

  • 36" (91 cm): needs ~28% more length than 44"
  • 44" (112 cm): the standard benchmark
  • 54" (137 cm): needs ~18% less length than 44"
  • Always check the actual width before buying

Blouse length and chest size

Standard blouse length is 14–16 inches. Longer blouses and larger chest sizes both increase fabric needed.

  • Length 17–20": add 0.15 m to the table values
  • Length 21–24": add 0.30 m to the table values
  • Chest above 46": add 0.15–0.25 m extra
  • Always buy 10% buffer over minimum

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many metres of fabric do I need for a blouse?

On 44" (112 cm) wide fabric: sleeveless needs 0.65–0.95 m, short sleeve 0.80–1.15 m, three-quarter sleeve 1.00–1.40 m, and full sleeve 1.15–1.60 m depending on chest size. Always buy 10% extra.

Is the blouse bit included with a saree enough?

Most sarees include 0.80–1.00 m of blouse fabric. This is enough for a sleeveless or short-sleeve blouse in size S or M. For full sleeve or chest size above 40", you usually need to buy additional matching fabric.

How much fabric for a full sleeve blouse in size L?

On 44" wide fabric, a full-sleeve blouse in size L (chest 42–46") needs 1.45 m at minimum. Buy 1.75 m to be safe, especially if the fabric has a pattern that needs matching.

Why does fabric width affect how many metres I need?

The fabric width determines how many pattern pieces fit across in a single cut. On 36" fabric, the body panels are cut one at a time, requiring more length. On 54" fabric, both front and back panels often fit side by side, reducing the total metres needed.
